Tioga County Sports Report
NEWFIELD — Playing with just eight players due to injuries and illness, Newark Valley pulled out a 2-1 overtime win over Newfield here Monday afternoon in IAC girls soccer action.

“The girls showed heart and determination,” said Newark Valley coach Chuck Schneider Jr.

“We found a way to win thanks to clutch performances from Emma Smith and Adrianna Finta,” he added.

Making her first start in goal, Emma Smith was a standout, delivering five crucial saves to keep Newark Valley in the match.

Newfield broke the scoreless tie 10 minutes into the second half, but Newark Valley refused to go away.

With about 13 minutes remaining in regulation, Finta found the equalizer, battling through Newfield's defense to tie the game at 1-1 and sending it to overtime.

In the extra period, the Cardinals delivered the final blow. With slightly less than two minutes remaining in the first overtime, Carlee Vice made her mark, providing a “perfectly-timed assist” — the first of her career — to Finta, who calmly slotted the game-winner to secure the 2-1 victory.

“Finta’s two-goal performance, combined with Smith’s clutch saves, proved to be the difference in a gritty, team-wide effort that saw Newark Valley prevail against the odds,” said Schneider Jr.

Newark Valley returns to action Wednesday night at O-M.
