STAC GIRLS SOCCER: OWEGO FALLS AT WAVERLY, 3-1 (24 PHOTOS) (2024-10-03)
Tioga County Sports ReportWAVERLY — Waverly scored two first-half goals, and held off Owego in the second half for a 3-1 win in STAC Central Division girls soccer action here Thursday night at Memorial Stadium.
“It was a tough game, the girls played great, but Waverly is a tough and hard-working team and they put us to the test,” said Owego coach Laurel Evans.
“The girls worked hard the entire game and didn’t give up, we couldn’t have asked for anything more from them.
“We were just unlucky a few times and it cost us, but we continue to learn from our mistakes and keep moving forward,” added Evans.
Kiley Stillman, off an assist from Addison Westbrook, scored about eight minutes into the game to give the Wolverines a quick 1-0 lead.
Westbrook, off a feed from Kaylin Twedt, made it 2-0 with a goal with 10 minutes remaining in the first half.
Owego’s Ashlyn Dalton scored on a long free kick midway through the second half to close the gap to 2-1, but junior Loralye Anthony, of an assist from Twedt, added an insurance goal for the Wolverines with eight minutes remaining in the contest.
Waverly had a 16-4 edge in shots-on-goal. Both teams had two corner kicks.
Olivia Dodge recorded 10 saves in net for the River Hawks.
Owego, now 4-5, hosts Seton Catholic Friday night.
