STAC BOYS SOCCER: OWEGO PULLS OUT 2-1 WIN OVER ONEONTA (2024-09-30)

Tioga County Sports Report
OWEGO — It’s never easy to get a win at Oneonta, and Monday was no different, but Owego pulled out a 2-1 win here in STAC boys soccer action.

It was a milestone win as coach Alessio De Michele recorded his 50th career win at Owego. De Michele has turned the River Hawks into a perennial Section IV contender, taking over a program that won just four games in the two season prior to his arrival in the spring of 2021 (Covid season).

“I would just like to thank all players, parents, ‘O-zone’ students and Owego administration for all their support and fun memories,” said De Michele.

Ryan Barnes put the River Hawks up 1-0 at halftime with a first-half goal, and Owego added an own goal early in the second half to take a 2-0 lead.

The Yellowjackets got on the board with 15 minutes remaining to close the gap to 2-1.

“This was a very challenging game,” said De Michele. “Oneonta had a game plan, stuck to it, got in our face and didn’t let us dictate the game.

“Credit to our boys to find a different solution as we were more dangerous from more direct passes into well-timed runs behind their defense,” he noted. “We can still close out games better after many well-executed counter attacks.

“Overall, it was not the best team performance, but no team of teenagers playing three games a week is going to be perfect,” added De Michele.

Joey Mikels and Vasil Brich were credited with assists for the River Hawks.

Owego, now 8-0, returns to action Wednesday night when it hosts Waverly.
