STAC GIRLS SOCCER: UNBEATEN CHENANGO VALLEY FENDS OFF OWEGO IN 2-1 WIN (2024-09-28)

Tioga County Sports Report
OWEGO — Unbeaten Chenango Valley scored a pair of first-half goals, and held off a resilient Owego in the second half for a 2-1 win here Saturday evening in STAC Central Division girls soccer action.

“The girls played their hearts out,” said Owego coach Laurel Evans. “They are finding that fight and fire that we need.

“They didn’t give up once and it showed with our ability to score after being down,” she said. “A lot did not go in our favor, but the girls were able to fight through that and play until the end.

“Defense again, played great along with our goalie and mids,” said Evans. “I’m not sure what kinda team we would be without them. And once our forwards and attacking-mid got in a groove, they were hard to stop.

“I am so proud of the girls and how they fought until the very end,” added Evans. “They keep impressing me every game.”

Emily Nickson, off a feed from Maddie Hayes, scored in the first minute of the game to give the Warriors a 1-0 lead.

Hayes found the net with 28 seconds remaining in the half to make it 2-0.

Ashlyn Dalton, on an assist from Kira Coppage, put Owego on the board about 9 1/2 minutes after the halftime intermission to close the gap to 2-1.

Both teams had nine shots-on-goal. Owego had a 4-1 edge in corner kicks.

Olivia Dodge recorded five saves in net for the River Hawks.

Owego, now 3-4, returns to action Tuesday at Oneonta.
