Tioga County Sports Report
OWEGO — Owego grad Alex Aubel has been selected as one of 60 nominees statewide to be voted on to be one of 10 finalists for the Heart of a Giant Award.
The contest is run by USA Football and the NY Giants. Players are nominated who have gone through adversity and show great character and leadership and are a part of their school’s tackle or flag football programs. The candidate who receives the most votes by Oct. 13 becomes a top 10 finalist. You may vote once per day.
According to
usafootball.com, Heart of a Giant is presented by Hospital for Special Surgery and the New York Giants. This award program seeks to find and highlight tri-state high school tackle and flag football athletes, student managers, student mascots or other designated student team members who demonstrate that extra something special. They’re the ones that have a relentless work ethic and unmatched love for the game.
Values like commitment, character, teamwork, dedication and will are crucial every season. But in times like this, they matter even more. When they can't be side by side, when they don't take the fields on Friday nights, who helps keep the team together? That's who they're looking for.
This past spring, Aubel, who played for the River Hawks for three seasons, caught 77 passes for 700 yards, both team highs, scored 11 TDs, and added seven extra points. She also chipped in with 30 tackles, six interceptions and 13 deflections, and was named to
The Sports Reports All-Region first team.
