IAC GIRLS SOCCER: LYON, STOUFFER NET HAT TRICKS IN SVEC'S 8-6 LOSS TO TIOGA (24 PHOTOS) (2024-09-25)

Tioga County Sports Report
SPENCER — Allie Lyon and Meradyth Stouffer each netted hat tricks, but it wasn’t enough as Tioga pulled out a wild, 8-6, win over SVEC in IAC girls soccer action here on a rainy Tuesday afternoon.

“Unfortunately, days like today happen in sports,” said first-year SVEC coach Michael Liljedal. “The girls came out quite flat, and it put us in a hole we couldn’t climb out of.

“After 14 minutes we found ourselves down 4-1, and it was a real wake-up call,” he noted. “Credit to Tioga for catching us off-guard like that because they had a game plan that worked perfectly for them and the adjustments we made were just too little, too late.

“I have to credit my girls, playing the third straight game with no subs,” added Leljedal. “Our third game in six days is really just a brutal stretch, but even after going down 4-1 the girls fought so hard. We brought back to within a single goal multiple times, we just couldn’t close the gap.”

Leljedal said he’s walking a fine line in preparing for the remainder of the season.

“The key going forward is for me finding a good balance between practice and rest.

“Quality preparation has to happen, but when you’re so low on numbers you have to account for energy and conditioning,” he said.

“The girls are better than the performance we put out today. We’ll work on fixing those mistakes and get ready for a tough, but exciting game against Trumansburg on Friday,” added Leljedal.

Grace Howey scored the first of her four goals on the day off a feed from freshman Natalie Kemp less than a minute into the game to kick off the scoring frenzy, and give Tioga a 1-0 lead.

Lyon, off an assist from Katie Coppage, tied the game with a goal about four minutes later.

Serenity Relyea scored her first career goal with 31:35 remaining off an assist from Sophia Haney, and Howey made it 3-1 less than a minute later off an assist from Erica Bradley.

Relyea capped a nifty run by Tioga with a goal off a setup from Haney to Howey to Relyea at point-blank range to extend the lead to 4-1.

Stouffer, off an assist from Lyon, scored late in the first half to close the gap to 4-2 at the intermission

Stouffer scored 15 minutes into the second half to trim the deficit to 4-3.

The teams then traded goals over the next 10 minutes to make it 6-5, with Howey and Haney scoring for the Tigers, and Lyon and Stouffer tallying goals for the Eagles.

Howey, off Haney’s third assist of the game, scored with 14:10 remaining to give Tioga a 7-5 lead, but Lyon, off a feed from Coppage, completed her hat trick 90 seconds later to make it 7-6.

With 6:10 remaining in the contest, Bradley added an insurance goal, off an assist from Layla LaBour, to provide the final margin.

SVEC had a 30-25 advantage in shots-on-goal, and a 6-4 edge in corner kicks.

SVEC, now 3-3-1, returns to action Friday at Trumansburg.
