IAC GIRLS SOCCER: NEWARK VALLEY CONTINUES STRONG PLAY WITH 3-1 WIN OVER NEWFIELD (10 PHOTOS) (2024-09-18)

NEWARK VALLEY — Newark Valley continued its strong start to the 2024 season with a 3-1 win over Newfield here Wednesday afternoon in IAC South girls soccer action.

Aubrey Kwiatkowski worked her way through several defenders, and fired a shot into the lower-right corner of the goal about 14 minutes into the game to give the Cardinals a 1-0 lead.

Newark Valley maintained the lead for the remainder of the first half, but Newfield pressured the NV net, and Cardinal keeper Annika Smith came up big with three crucial saves to keep the game at 1-0.

In the second half, Newark Valley found its rhythm offensively.

With 26 minutes remaining, Emma Smith provided a well-timed assist to Livia Short, who calmly placed her shot into the lower left corner to double the lead.

Just four minutes later, Adrianna Finta sealed the victory with a penalty kick to up the advantage to 3-0.

Newfield managed to pull one back late in the game, scoring with just over six minutes left to avoid the shutout.

Newark Valley had a 20-10 advantage in shots-on-goal, while both teams had five corner kicks.

Smith recorded five saves in net for the Cardinals.

Newark Valley, now 3-1, returns to action in the Greene Tournament Thursday and Saturday.
