STAC BOYS SOCCER: OWEGO SCORES EIGHT SECOND-HALF GOALS IN 11-0 WIN OVER WAVERLY (24 PHOTOS) (2024-09-18)

Tioga County Sports Report
WAVERLY — Owego controlled the ball, and led 3-0 at the half, then the dam burst on the Waverly defense, and the River Hawks pumped in eight second-half goals for an 11-0 win here Wednesday night in STAC Central Division boys soccer action at Memorial Stadium.

“Obviously it ended in big result, but at halftime Waverly’s resistance and teamwork at the back kept the result close,” said Owego coach Alessio de Michele. “Then, our possession and strength off the bench made a big difference.

“Credit to our boys, every player made a great impact and showed our ideas of how we want to play with and without the ball,” he noted.

“I’m super-proud of the whole team and how they build each other up and make this a family,” added de Michele “We had four players score their first varsity goals, so that’s always a wonderful feeling as a coach to see them get rewarded.”

Matt Samuelson netted a hat trick, and Matt Higgins had two goals and one assist to pace the River Hawk offense, while Vasil Brich had one goal, and two assists, and Adam Llewellyn dished out a pair of assists.

Mason Wold, Blythe miller, Sawyer Prentiss, and Daniel Kennedy each scored one goal — the first varsity goal for each of them — for Owego, and Zyir VanScoy, Owen Hallenback, Ryan Barnes, Bryce Oliver, and Danny Tavelli each had one assist.

Owego had a 15-0 advantage in shots-on-goal, and a 4-0 edge in corner kicks.

Waverly keeper Aiden Doherty recorded four saves.

Owego, now 4-0, returns to action Saturday night when it hosts Seton Catholic.
