SECTION IV FIELD HOCKEY: NEWARK VALLEY FALLS TO VESTAL IN SEASON-OPENER (24 PHOTOS) (2024-09-05) Tioga County Sports Report NEWARK VALLEY — The Newark Valley defense came up big early, keeping the score just 1-0 after one quarter, but defending sectional champion Vestal eventually pulled away for a 6-0 win here Thursday in Section IV field hockey action.
Vestal, who was 16-2 a year ago and won the Class B sectional crown, added two in the second, one in the third and two in the fourth to get the win.
Grace Guiles had 10 saves in net for Newark Valley to keep things close throughout.
Ryan Schweckendieck had two defensive saves for the Cardinals and Madelynn Mele had a defensive save.
Ava Lucenti had two goals for Vestal and Allie Policare also had two goals for the Golden Bears.
Maggie Costello and Elsa Hartman each finished with goals for Vestal in the win.
Helene Ryan, Kara Malejs and Ava Peters finished with assists for the Golden Bears.
Vestal had 18 shots and Newark Valey had 10 shots in the game.
