SECTION IV FIELD HOCKEY: STEELE, SCHMIDT POWER OWEGO TO 11-1 SEASON-OPENING WIN OVER TIOGA (2024-09-04)
Tioga County Sports ReportOWEGO — Ashleigh Steele netted four goals, and Aubrey Schmidt added three goals to lead Owego to a season-opening, 11-1, win over Tioga here Wednesday afternoon in Section IV field hockey action.
The River Hawks scored two goals in the first quarter, then put five into the net in the second quarter to take a 7-1 lead into the halftime intermission.
“It was a great overall team effort win tonight,” said Owego coach Ashlee Marsh.
“We need to clean up a couple things tomorrow, but I’m looking forward to building off tonight’s win,” she added.
Schmidt opened the scoring about 90 seconds into the game, on an assist from Lexi Cheeseman off a penalty corner.
Steele made it 2-0 off an assist from Eva Crawford with 1:48 remaining in the first quarter.
Steele scored a pair of goals 40 seconds apart in the second quarter to give Owego a 4-0 lead with 7:12 remaining in the first half.
Just 27 seconds later, Schmdit scored to make it 5-0.
Junior Abby Engelbert put Tioga on the board with 4:49 remaining in the first half on the Tigers’ only shot-on-goal of the game.
Mikayla Wilbur put her name in the scoring column with 3:36 remaining in the half to extend the lead to 6-1, then Schmidt, off an assist from Gianna Yaichuk, scored 46 seconds later to make it 7-1 at the half.
Wilbur, Cheeseman, Steele, and Raelynn Craft, off an assist from Crawford, scored in the second half to provide the final margin.
Owego had an 18-1 advantage in shots-on-goal, and a
16-1 edge in penalty corners.
Bella Pursell recorded 12 saves in net for the Tigers.
Owego returns to action Friday when it hosts Susquehanna Valley. Game time is 5 p.m.
