YOUTH BASEBALL: OWEGO FALLS TO GLADIATORS IN TEENER 16U ELIMINATION GAME (2024-07-25)

VESTAL — In their first meeting of the Tri County Teener League 16U playoffs, Owego rallied from six runs down to defeat the M-E Gladiators. This time, Owego wasn’t as fortunate as M-E pulled away for a 16-5 consolation bracket win Thursday evening.

Owego trailed, 7-1, when rain halted play in the bottom of the second inning Wednesday, but was never able to stage a comeback when play resumed.

The Gladiators scored a pair of runs in the third and added three more in the fifth to build a 10-run cushion.

Owego found itself trailing, 7-0, before consecutive walks to Nick Brown, Devan Card and Cayden Smith receiving walks in the second with Brown stealing home in the midst of it to put his team on the scoreboard.

M-E increased its advantage to 9-1 in the third, then Parker Jenkins belted a double to start off the home half of the inning. He would steal home following walks to Jake Bensley and Elijah Wheeler, and a pair of strikeouts.

Behind, 12-2, Owego picked up another run after Noah Christ singled, stole two bases and scored on a Brown single.

The Gladiators would extend the lead to 14-3 in the sixth, then Owego put together a brief two-out rally. Tyler Lewis and Jenkins walked, both stole a base and both scored on a Bensley single to left.

M-E posted two more runs in the seventh to make it 16-5. Jake Papp took over on the mound for the Gladiators and struck out four of the final seven batters to secure the victory.

Jackson Ropiecki led the M-E hitters, going 4-for-4 as the Gladiators racked up 18 hits and also took advantage of 14 walks.

Jenkins went 2-for-3 with two runs to pace Owego. Brown contributed a hit, run and RBI; Bensley had a hit and two RBI; and Lewis and Christ added a hit and a run each.
