YOUTH BASEBALL: OWEGO DROPS HIGH-SCORING DUEL IN TEENER 16U SEMIS (2024-07-24)

ENDWELL — Owego staged a comeback to take the lead in the final inning, but the Belgray Bombers rallied in the home half to pull out a 10-9 victory in the Tri County Teener League 16U winner’s bracket semifinals Tuesday evening.

Joe Miller’s walk-off two-run single in the sixth lifted the Bombers to victory after Owego had scored a half-dozen runs to grab a 9-8 edge. Belgray had loaded the bases with a single and two walks.

In the top half of the inning, Owego’s Parker Jenkins and Matt Lewis followed outs with walks, thenTyler Lewis walked and Devan Card was hit by a pitch to score a run.

With the sacks filled, Jake Bensley launched a two-run double to right field and Noah Christ smacked a two-run double to left, knotting the score at eight. Christ would steal home to give Owego the lead.

Belgray scored twice in both the second and third innings with Owego plating a pair in between. Jenkins, and Matt and Tyler Lewis started off the third with singles, Card walked and Bensley pushed a pair of runs across with a double to left.

Down 4-3, Owego closed the gap to a run in the fourth as Evan Wheeler doubled, advanced to third on a wild pitch, with Jenkins reaching on a dropped third strike on the play, then Wheeler stole home.

The Bombers scored four in the fifth behind a double, three singles and a walk, but Owego refused to quit.

Bensley went 3-for-3 with a run and four RBI to pace the Owego effort. Christ contributed a hit, a run and two RBI; Tyler and Matt Lewis added a hit and two runs apiece; Wheeler and Jenkins chipped in with one hit and one run each; and Card tacked on a run and an RBI.

Owego faces the M-E Gladiators this evening at 7:45 p.m. at Vestal’s Arnold Park. Owego rallied from six runs down to win their first meeting of the tournament, 15-12.
