YOUTH BASEBALL: CANDOR TOTH UPSETS SV FITZGERALD, ADVANCES TO SEMIS (2024-07-19)

OWEGO — Sixth-seeded Candor Toth scored the maximum five runs in the top of the first inning en route to a 13-5 upset of No. 3 SV Fitzgerald in the quarterfinals of the 10C Championship bracket in the Owego Little League 10U Tournament Friday evening.
Gunner Toth, Ayden Pressure and Remington Winchester connected for singles, Easton Ahart, Keegen Gregrow, Gavin Benjamin and Colton French drew walks, and Ryan Wakeman was hit by a pitch to contribute to the early lead.
Tate Wakeman walked and scored on a single by Chase French in the second to make it 6-1, and Gregrow walked and scored on Pressure’s single to push the lead to 7-1 in the third.
With Candor leading 7-2 in the fourth, Tate Wakeman, Ryan Wakeman, Ahart, Toth and Pressure drew walks to make it 9-2.
Winchester, Justin Milks and Tate W walked in the fifth, Chase French brought Winchester home with a fielder’s choice, then Ryan Wakeman and Ahart walked to score Tate Wakeman and build an 11-3 cushion.
SV picked up a pair of runs in the top of the fifth, but Candor responded with a pair of runs after Gregrow took one for the team and Pressure drilled an inside-the-park home run.
Pressure went 3-for-3 with two runs and five RBI; and Winchester was 2-for-2 with a run and an RBI. Toth registered a hit, run and two RBI; Ahart chipped in with a hit, run and RBI; Chase French recorded a hit and two RBI; Gregrow scored three runs; Tate and Ryan Wakeman scored three and two runs, respectively; and Benjamin and Colton French scored a run apiece.
Candor walked 20 times and stole nine bases.
Ahart went 3 ⅔ innings on the mound, struck out six, and gave up four hits and four walks. Benjamin threw 2 ⅓ innings with two strikeouts, two hits and three walks.
Candor (3-1) meets second-seeded Greene Anastos (4-0) in the semifinals Saturday at 10 a.m. on Hyde Park Field 4.
