YOUTH BASEBALL: CANDOR LYON RALLIES AGAIN TO DEFEAT PENN YAN (2024-07-19)
Tioga County Sports Report
OWEGO — A little deja vu maybe? Candor Lyon, which rallied in the bottom of the third inning to defeat Penn Yan Dawson in pool play Tuesday, repeated the feat again Thursday to top Penn Yan, 8-3, in the first round of the 12B Gold bracket in the Owego Little League 12U Tournament.
Penn Yan pushed a run across in the top of the first inning, then tacked on two more in the third, but when Candor stepped to the plate in the home half of the third, it unleashed a six-run barrage to take the lead for good.
The comeback started with a Logan Edwards walk, a Jackson Watson double and a Brock Rose walk to load the bases, then another walk by Xander Reger to score Logan Edwards. Watson and Rose would score on a passed ball, knotting the score, and Reger would make it 4-3 on a Colin Strong sacrifice fly.
Bentley Anderson would draw a base on balls, then Lucas Edwards would get hit by a pitch, move to third on a pair of passed balls and steal home. Cameron Labarre’s double to center field would plate Anderson to make it 6-3.
Candor tacked on a pair of insurance runs in the fourth. Rose would sandwich a double between walks to Watson and Reger, and Watson would score on a passed ball. After Anderson was hit by a pitch, Rose would score on a passed ball to make it 8-3.
Penn Yan would put two runners on in the fifth and two on in the sixth, but couldn’t advance anyone past second.
Candor made the most of six hits and eight walks, including four hits which were doubles.
Watson went 2-for-3 with two runs; Rose had a hit and two runs; Logan Edwards added a hit and a run; Reger contributed a run and an RBI; Strong and Labarre chipped in with one hit and one RBI apiece; and Lucas Edwards and Anderson scored one run each.
Reger earned the win, striking out six, walking one and scattering five hits over four innings. Rose and Strong combined to fan four batters during the final two innings, surrendering one hit and three walks.
Candor faces top-seeded Chenango Valley McMahon at 5:45 p.m. this evening on Hyde Park Field 2.
