YOUTH BASEBALL: OWEGO MOSES ADVANCES TO TOURNAMENT SEMIS (2024-07-18)

Tioga County Sports Report
OWEGO — Owego Moses rolled to an 18-8 victory over M-E Davis and into the 10B semifinals of the Owego Little League 10U Tournament Wednesday.

Owego, which went 3-0 in pool play to earn the No. 2 seed, scored nine runs in the bottom of the first inning and led 11-0 heading into the third inning.

With two away, and Nat Robinson and Austin Gregory on base, Isaiah Lewis drew a base on balls to load the bases and Mike Schmidt walked to bring in the game’s first run. Mays Miller and Dom Russell-Wilkins followed with two-run singles for a 5-0 advantage.

Consecutive walks to Maxx Thole, Zachariah Wheeler, Maddox Hall and Hank Talbot made it 7-0, then Moose Monell’s two-run single gave Owego a 9-0 cushion.

Gregory and Xavier Moses walked to begin the bottom of the second, and both scored on Miller’s two-out double to create an 11-0 cushion.

M-E parlayed five walks, two singles and an error into a six-run rally in the third, but Owego countered with its own six-run burst in the home half of the inning.

Thole, Wheeler and Hall walked to load the bases, and a fielder’s choice off Talbot’s bat brought in a run. Monell singled home a pair of runs, Robinson was hit by a pitch, Gregory walked, Monell stole home, Robinson scored on an error and Gregory scored on a passed ball, pushing the lead to 17-6.

M-E picked up two more runs in the fourth, but Schmidt singled and scored following a Miller single to end the game by “mercy” rule.

Miller enjoyed a 3-for-3 performance at the plate with a run and five RBI while Monell went 2-for-3 with a run and four RBI, and Russell-Wilkins added a hit, a run and two RBI.

Gregory chipped in with a hit and three runs; Schmidt had a hit, two runs and an RBI; Talbot added a run and two RBI; Robinson, Thole and Wheeler scored two runs each; Hall had a run and an RBI; and Moses and Lewis tacked on one run apiece.

Gregory, Wheeler and Lewis joined forces on the mound, giving up six hits and seven walks while striking out five. Gregory got the win.

Owego takes on U-E Gennarelli in a semifinal Saturday at 10 a.m. on Hyde Park Field 1. Owego won the pool play clash with U-E, 11-10.
