YOUTH BASEBALL: OWEGO ROBINSON WINS TWO OVER WEEKEND (2024-07-15)

OWEGO — Owego Robinson won a pair of games over the weekend in 12C pool play in the Owego Little League 12U Tournament. They defeated M-E Summerfeld, 19-7, on Saturday, then blanked M-E Caldwell, 3-0, on Sunday.

Owego played four pool play games, but only three games count toward the pool standings, so teams who play four games, have their worst performance thrown out, thus the win vs. Summerfeld did not count in the standings.

Owego scored 13 runs in the bottom of the first inning and cruised from there.

The big inning included a two-run triple by Gavin Harrington and an RBI double from Sawyer Calice as well as six singles, four walks, two hit batters, and runs scored on a fielder’s choice, an error and a wild pitch.

M-E closed the gap to 13-6 in the second, but Owego responded with a trio of runs in its half of the inning, then tacked on three more in the third.

Ethan Nikulich went 3-for-3 with two runs and an RBI; Harrington was 2-for-2 with three runs and three RBI; Chandler Serfass was 2-for-2 with three runs and an RBI; and Gavin Sipe was 2-for-2 with a run and an RBI.

Calice and Kaden Kacmar each had a hit, run and two RBI; Vinnie Yaichuk and Dalton Marsh contributed a hit, run and RBI apiece; Slade Kiczek recorded a hit, two runs, an RBI and three stolen bases; Nolan Whigham had a hit, two runs and an RBI; and Peyton Avery and Jaxson Weaver scored one run apiece.

Kiczek struck out three, walked four, and allowed one hit and two earned runs in one inning. Sipe threw two innings without yielding an earned run. He struck out one, walked one and gave up two hits. Calice pitched one inning, fanning two, walking one, allowing two hits and no earned runs.

Harrington struck out 14 batters as Owego registered its third pool play shutout.

He also scored the game-winning run, delivering a single with two away in the bottom of the fourth scoring on a Calice RBI double, Calice stole third and home to make it 2-0.

Kiczek led off the home half of the fifth with a triple, but was erased at the plate, however, Avery followed with a single and three stolen bases to make it a 3-0 contest.

Yaichuk had a triple while Nikulich, Harrington, Calice, Kiczek, Avery and Sipe added one single apiece.

Harrington retired nine consecutive batters at one point. He faced 22 batters, giving up one hit and one walk, with two runners reaching via errors.

Owego earned the top seed for bracket play, outscoring its victims, 31-0. The team’s next game is Saturday at 12:30 p.m. on Hyde Park Field 3.
