YOUTH BASEBALL: CANDOR TURNS AWAY M-E IN 10U POOL PLAY ACTION (2024-07-13)

Tioga County Sports Report
OWEGO — Candor Toth scored five runs in each of the first three innings to turn away M-E Makres, 15-12, in “C” division pool play in the Owego Little League 10U Tournament Thursday.

Candor recorded nine hits and 10 walks to overcome four hits and 18 walks from M-E.

Down 3-0 in their first at-bats, the Coyotes got started with a single from Ryan Wakeman and a walk to Easton Ahart. M-E would record a pair of outs, the second on a ground ball that would score a run.

Colton French walked and Remington Winchester plated two runs with a single to tie the score. Following a base on balls to Justin Milks, Ryan Stevens belted a two-run triple to right field to give Candor a 5-3 lead.

M-E bounced back to grab a 6-5 edge, but Candor chalked up another five runs in the home half of the second.

Gavin Benjamin was hit by a pitch, Chase French walked and Tate Wakeman delivered a two-run double for a 7-6 Coyote advantage. Keegen Gregrow took one for the team and Ryan Wakeman followed with an RBI single. Walks to Ahart, Gunner Toth and Ayden Pressure pushed the Candor lead to 10-6.

M-E refused to go away, however, knotting the score at 10 in its half of the third.

The Coyotes started the bottom of the frame with an out, but took the lead for good on walks to Winchester and Milks, and a two-run single by Stevens. Gavin B’s follow-up single provided what would be the game-winning run, making it a 13-10 contest. Chase French singled, Tate Wakeman walked and Gregrow punched a hard ground ball double to left to bring in the final two runs.

M-E got two runs back in the top of the fourth, but Candor ended the game with a double play.

Stevens went 2-for-2 with a run and four RBI to pace the Coyotes’ bats while Ryan Wakeman was 2-for-2 with two runs and an RBI. Winchester contributed a hit, two runs and two RBI; and Benjamin had a hit, two runs and an RBI.

Tate Wakeman and Gregrow chipped in with one hit, one run and two RBI apiece; Chase French added a hit and two runs; Milks scored twice; Pressure had two RBI; Ahart and Colton French scored one run each; and Toth tacked on an RBI.

Ahart, Toth and Benjamin shared the pitching duties with Toth earning the win and Benjamin picking up the save.

Candor (1-0) continues pool play today against Binghamton Tinder at 4:30 on the Owego Free Academy softball field, but could be missing players who are participating in the Gus Macker 3-on-3 Basketball Tournament.
