TRAVEL BASEBALL : HIGH HEAT 14U WINS WILD SLUGFEST (2023-06-29)

Tioga County Sports Report
WAVERLY — For years, East Waverly Park played host to Waverly High School’s home baseball games in the spring, and Babe Ruth and Legion ball during the summer.

Aside from one summer of baseball nearly 10 years ago, East Waverly Park hasn’t hosted baseball on a regular basis in more than 20 years — until now.

On Thursday, High Heat 14U, based in the Waverly Sports Complex, played its first home game at East Waverly Park, and came out on top in a wild, 20-14, slugfest against the Seneca All-Stars.

High Heat scored six runs in the bottom of the first inning to take a 6-2 lead, but the Seneca All-Stars battled back to tie the game at 7-7 after 3 1/2 innings.

High Heat scored twice in the bottom of the fourth to take a 9-7 lead, then put the game away with 10 runs in the fifth inning to extend the lead to 19-7.

Seneca closed the gap in the sixth inning, then scored four times in the top of the seventh to provide the final margin.

Owego’s Caden Morrow was 2-for-3 with a double, four runs, a stolen base, and one RBI, while Owego’s Beckett Tirinato singled and scored two runs, while Towanda’s Hudson Stevens and Lucas Vincent each scored two runs, and Waverly’s Griffin Walter scored one run.

For the Seneca All-Stars, Waverly’s Ahren McCarthy was 1-for-3 with a double.
