SECTION IV BOYS TRACK & FIELD: OWEGO’S KING SURPRISES IN 100 AT STATE QUALIFIER (2024-05-30)

Tioga County Sports Report
ENDICOTT —Owego’s Jaeden King registered a surprising performance in the 100-meter dash at the Section IV Division II Track & Field Championships Thursday.

It actually started during Wednesday’s preliminary heat races. Seeded just 10th in Division II (16th overall), King recorded a time of 11.42 seconds. It bested his seed time of 11.46 seconds and was fast enough to land him one of eight spots in the finals.

In the finals, King would chop a huge chunk off his seed time, crossing the finish line in 11.28 seconds. He would finish seventh overall and fourth in D-2.

Newark Valley’s Dan Truesdail, seeded eighth in Division II and overall in the shot put, heaved the orb 43 feet, 5 ½ inches. That was four inches further than his seed distance and earned the senior a sixth in D-2 and overall.

S-VE distance standout John Garrison didn’t need to push himself, having already met the state meet Super Standard in the 3,000 steeplechase. He just needed to compete at sectionals to seal the deal and took fourth in Division II and seventh overall (10:50.55).

He also ran a relaxed pace in the 1600 and came in fifth in D-2 and ninth overall (4:34.01).

Garrison would team up with Brian Belanger, Gabe Benjamin and Eddie Rixford in the 4x800 relay, and were seventh in D-2 and 10th overall (8:55.57). They were seeded seventh and 12th, and knocked almost two seconds off their seed time of 10:57.54.

NV’s Logan Rhodes placed seventh in Division II in the pole vault and ninth overall, clearing 11-6.

The Cardinals’ Zion King took eighth in Division II and ninth overall in the pentathlon with 1,916 points. In the final two events Thursday, he was fifth in D-2 and sixth overall in the 1500 (5:31.52) and seventh in D-2 and eighth overall in the long jump (16-4 ½).
