TIOGA COUNTY SPORTS REPORT: OWEGO’S MCEVOY & PALLADINO, NEWARK VALLEY’S RHODES NAMED S.E.E.D. ‘ATHLETES OF THE WEEK’ (2024-05-14)

TIOGA COUNTY — Two of Owego’s top female athletes and a homer-hitting slugger from Newark Valley have been named the Tioga County Sports Report / S.E.E.D. “Athletes of the Week” for April 29 through May 4.

Co-Female Athletes of the Week: Madison McEvoy and Stella Palladino, Owego
McEvoy, a junior midfielder on the lacrosse team, scored 17 goals as the River Hawks went 2-1 to finish the season with an 8-7 record. She connected for six goals in a 10-9 loss to Union Endicott and a 12-4 win over Elmira. She also had five goals and four assists as Owego defeated Seton Catholic, 15-7. McEvoy's stats also included 13 forced turnovers, 11 ground balls, 10 draws won and an interception.

Palladino, a sophomore sprinter, chalked up a combined six victories in a STAC dual meet and at the Parkhurst Track & Field Invitational. She won the 100-, 200- and 400-meter dashes, and the pole vault in an 89-45 win over Chenango Valley. At the Parkhurst, she led the River Hawks to a fourth-place team showing by winning the 100 and 200, and running a leg of the fifth-place 4x400 relay.

Male Athlete of the Week: Ryan Rhodes, Newark Valley
The senior shortstop belted five home runs in two games. He had three in a 22-8 win over Whitney Point and another in an 8-2 loss to undefeated Union Springs (which went on to win the IAC Small School championship). For the week, he hit .625 (5-for-8) with a .667 on-base percentage, scored five runs and drove in nine more. Rhodes had nine putouts and one assist, and also struck out a trio of batters in a brief relief stint.
