STAC SOFTBALL: OWEGO CRUISES TO 15-1 VICTORY OVER NORWICH (2024-05-07)

Tioga County Sports Report
OWEGO — Carsten Crawford twirled a two-hitter and received plenty of bat support, including her own stick, as Owego cruised to a 15-1, five-inning win over Norwich in STAC softball action Tuesday.

Crawford struck out six batters and didn’t yield a walk. She was also 3-for-4 with a run and three RBI to help lead a 16-hit barrage.

Also contributing a trio of hits were Brooklyn Gaurnier, 3-for-3 with four runs and three RBI, and Alex Aubel, 3-for-3 with four runs.

The Purple Tornado grouped a leadoff single, sacrifice bunt and error into a 1-0 lead, but that would be it.

The River Hawks took control of the game in the home half of the first on a Maia Smith double, singles by Aubel and Crawford, walks to Guarnier, Miley Laubach and Kylie Grippen, and an error off the bat of Ava Brown.

They racked up four more runs in each of the next two innings to build a comfortable 13-1 cushion.

Doubles by Gaurnier and Crawford provided the second inning spark while Aubel, Brown and Jill Lewis added singles and Laubach drew a base on balls.

In the third, Crawford smacked a double, Lexi Cheeseman, Guarnier, Laubach and Grippen singled, Aubel and Lewis walked, and Brown had a ground out RBI.

The River Hawks’ final two runs came in the fourth after Aubel singled, and Guarnier and Brown delivered consecutive RBI triples.

Joining in on the Owego hit parade were Brown, who was 2-for-4 with two runs and three RBI. Cheeseman, Laubach, Lewis, Smith and Grippen chipped in with one hit apiece. Laubach also contributed three runs and an RBI; Smith drove in a pair of runs; Lewis and Grippen plated one run each; and Cheeseman scored a run.

Six of the River Hawks’ runs were of the extra-base variety. They also had eight stolen bases, four by Aubel.

Owego (7-8) closes out the regular season Wednesday at Oneonta (8-6).
