IAC BASEBALL: NEWARK VALLEY RALLIES, BUT FALLS IN 7TH (2024-04-23)

Tioga County Sports Report
MARATHON — Newark Valley rallied from a 4-0 deficit only to stumble in the seventh inning in a 7-6 IAC baseball loss to Marathon Monday.

The Olympians took advantage of a passed ball on a third strike to put the winning run on base, then moved the runner, Colton Oram, around the bases on a steal, single and wild pitch.

NV had a chance to break a 6-6 deadlock in the top of the inning following Josh Karp’s one-out single, but Blake Birdsall struck out the side to end any threat.

After turning a double play in the top of the first, Marathon plated four runs in the home half of the first without getting a hit. The Olympians were issued six walks.

The Cardinals got on the scoreboard in the fourth on a Brandon Eynon walk, Ryan Rhodes triple and a Karp single.

An error, two walks and a single helped the Olympians get the runs back in the bottom of the inning.

NV retaliated with a trio of runs in the fifth. A walk to Brenton Payne, singles by Will Craparo and Eynon, and an error closed the gap to 6-4, then an RBI double from Rhodes made it 6-5.

Newark Valley would tie the score in the sixth on a Craparo sacrifice fly following a pair of walks and a ground out.

The Olympians loaded the bases in the bottom of the sixth on two hits and an error, but Karp struck out a batter and another base runner was caught stealing home.

NV outhit Marathon, 6-4. Karp went 2-for-3 with an RBI and Rhodes was 2-for-4 with a triple, double, a run and two RBI. Eynon was 1-for-2 with two runs and an RBI and Craparo was 1-for-2 with a run and RBI. Tim Wojtysiak and Payne added one run each.

Three Cardinal pitchers combined for nine strikeouts, but surrendered nine walks.

NV (3-3) hosts Groton at 4:30 p.m. today.
