IAC SOFTBALL: EDISON OVERPOWERS SVEC TO HAND EAGLES FIRST LOSS (2024-04-15)

Tioga County Sports Report
SPENCER — The Spencer-Van Etten/Candor softball team fell into an early hole and never recovered in a 20-2 five inning loss to Edison in IAC action Monday.

The Spartans struck early, cranking out eight runs in the first inning. They connected for three consecutive singles to start the game. Following an error, a walk and a fly out, Carissa Cowan smacked a triple to the right-center field gap, giving Edison a 5-0 advantage.

SVEC’s Roni Presher would register a strikeout, then Maycie Bennett delivered a triple to left-center before the visitors added two more singles to make it 8-0.

All-state pitcher Gabby Milazzo, coming off a perfect game Friday, checked the Eagles on 10 strikeouts before they could score. That run came in the fifth after Cheylee Campbell reached on an error to start to lead off, then Raegan Sudnikovich belted a two-out home run.

Milazzo allowed just three hits. She gave up a leadoff single to Nicola Soper in the second and a two-out triple to Sudnikovich in the third.

Presher retired five batters in a row, but the Spartans got back on track with a five-run fifth to make it 13-0. They would add seven more in the fourth.

Edison finished with 19 hits, including home runs by Emma Maggs and Cowan. Brianna Korsky had four hits on the day and Milazzo aided her own effort with three.

Sudnikovich went 2-for-3 at the plate and Soper was 1-for-2.

The Eagles were without the services of Faith Brenchley and Jillian Holmes, both starters in the infield last season.

SVEC (4-1) hosts Edison (5-1) again on Wednesday.
