IAC SOFTBALL: SVEC ROLLS TO TWO MORE VICTORIES (2024-04-13)

SPENCER — The Spencer-Van Etten/Candor softball team proved that Wednesday’s 14-1 victory over Elmira Notre Dame was no fluke, rolling to a pair of lopsided 5-inning wins over the Crusaders Friday.

GAME 1
SVEC 12, ND 3
The Eagles scored three runs in the first two innings, then tacked on another trio in the third to secure the win.

A Raegan Sudnikovich double highlighted the SVEC half of the first inning, and she and Phoebe Swartz scored, and Nicola Soper drove in a run for a 2-0 lead. Ryleigh Bowman added a home run in the second for a 3-1 advantage.

Sudnikovich led off the third with a double and Swartz drove her in, then scored on Soper’s base hit. Hannah Smith and Aubrie Kastenhuber followed with hits, Kastenhuber’s making it a 6-1 margin.

SVEC locked up the win with a six-run fourth as Bowman, Roni Presher and Sudnikovich singled, Katelyn Klym doubled, Soper reached on an error, Smith singled, Kastenhuber reached on an error and Alexis Teribury singled. Klym picked up two RBI during the surge while Sudnikovich and Smith added one apiece.

Sudnikovich was 3-for-3 with three runs, Klym went 2-for-2, Bowman, Soper and Smith were all 2-for-3. Swartz, Kastenhuber, Teribury and Presher added one hit each.

Kastenhuber scattered three hits, walked two and hit one batter, and struck out four.

GAME 2
SVEC 12, ND 1
Presher surrendered three hits and two walks, and retired 11 of the final 13 batters as the Eagles pulled away to improve to 4-0 on the season.

Sudnikovich walked and scored in the first to tie the game at one and the Crusaders got out of a two-on jam in the second, but SVEC erupted for five runs in the third to take control.

Grace Handy led off with a base on balls, and Sudnikovich and Swartz drew walks to load the sacks. Klym reached on an error, Soper followed with an RBI double and Presher added an RBI single. Handy, Sudnikovich, Swartz, Klym and Soper scored to make it 6-1.

Sudnikovich belted a triple in the fourth and Swartz brought her home with a base hit.

The Eagles racked up five more runs in the fifth. Klym led off with a double, Soper singled, Presher had a sacrifice fly, Smith reached on an error, Cheylee Campbell walked, and Teribury, Handy and Sudnikovich singled. Klym, Soper, Smith, Campbell and Teribury scored. Handy had an RBI while Sudnikovich drove in two runs with her hit to end the game.

Sudnikovich went 2-for-2 with three runs and two RBI; Swartz was 1-for-1 with a run and RBI; Klym had a double, two runs and an RBI; Soper was 2-for-3 with two runs and an RBI; Presher was 1-for-1 with an RBI; Smith and Campbell scored one run each; Teribury had a hit and a run; and Handy added a hit, run and RBI.

SVEC starts a three-game series with Edison Monday on the road. The Spartans are coming off a perfect game by Gabby Milazzo.
