GROTON — The Newark Valley softball team took its show on the road Friday, playing on Groton’s turf rather than postponing at home.

Joslyn Wright and Rosie Wandell, who combined to no-hit the Red Hawks Wednesday, teamed up for a one-hitter this time as the Cardinals rolled to a 14-2 six-inning victory in IAC action.

Playing as the home team, NV scored twice in the bottom of the first inning, traded single runs with Groton in the third and went ahead 4-1 in the fourth. Back-to-back five-run uprisings in the fifth and sixth sealed the win.

Kayden Rockwell smacked a one-out triple and Kaitlyn Keith followed with a home run in the first. Becca Thompson walked and scored on an error in the third then consecutive singles by Ruthanne Walburn, Jenna Vosburgh and Hattie Hines loaded the bases with Walburn scoring on a passed ball in the fourth.

In the fifth, Keith singled, Laura Ludwig reached on an error, Walburn was hit by a pitch, and Hines, Haven Aylesworth, Wandell and Rockwell walked as NV pushed its lead to 9-2.

Walburn, Vosburgh, Hines, Wright, Rockwell and Keith walked in the sixth, Ludwig took one for the team and Wandell singled as the Cardinals tacked on its final five runs.

NV ended up with a dozen walks and seven hits as it improved to 3-1 on the season.

Keith set the pace at the plate, going 2-for-4 with two runs and two RBI. Walburn had a hit and three runs; Hines added a hit and two runs; Wandell chipped in with a hit and two RBI; Rockwell had a hit run and RBI; Aylesworth and Ludwig had one run and one RBI each; Vosburgh helped out with a hit and a run; and Wright, Becca Thompson and Sierrah Thompson tacked on one run apiece.

Wright struck out 10 batters in four innings, walked three, and gave up one unearned run. Wandell tossed the final two frames, giving up one unearned run on one hit and three walks while striking out two.

NV hosts Newfield Monday.
