IAC SOFTBALL: NEWARK VALLEY’S WRIGHT, WANDELL TEAM UP TO NO-HIT GROTON (2024-04-10)

Tioga County Sports Report
GROTON — Joslyn Wright and Rosie Wandell combined to no-hit Groton during Newark Valley’s 8-3 IAC softball win Wednesday.

Wright took the circle for the first four innings and worked through some control issues, striking out nine while walking six batters. Wandell threw the final three, walking two and stringing out one.

The Red Hawks managed to score a trio of runs, only one being earned, in the bottom of the third inning to tie the game.

Jenna Vosburgh scored the go-ahead run in the fourth, walking, stealing second and scoring on a Laura Ludwig single.

NV grabbed the early lead when Vosburgh reached on an error in the top of the first, moved to second on a walk, third on a passed ball and scored on a Ludwig base hit.

Kaitlyn Keith, who walked and ended up at third via the passed ball and hit, made it 2-0 on a Hattie Hines fielder’s choice.

NV went up 3-0 in the second after Lexi Rosengrant reached on a dropped third strike, a groundout to second and an error off the bat of Keith.

The Cardinals extended their advantage to 7-3 in the sixth. Rosengrant led off with a triple and scored on a Vosburgh fielder’s choice. Wright walked, moved to second on defensive interference and third on the fielder’s choice, then scored on a three-run homer from Keith.

NV would tack on one more run in the seventh after Becca Thompson reached on an error, then moved up on a passed ball and a groundout, and scored on a Rosengrant single.

Keith drove in three runs and scored twice, and had one hit; Rosengrant went 2-for-4 with a run and an RBI; and Ludwig was 2-for-5 with two RBI.

Vosburgh scored three runs; Wright and Thompson contributed one run each; Hines drove in one run and Abby Groover had a hit in her only at-bat.

The Cardinals also took advantage of six Groton errors.

NV (2-1) wraps up a three-game series with Groton at home Friday.
