NEWARK VALLEY — Rosie Wandell scattered five hits, and she and three others delivered multiple hits as Newark Valley defeated Groton, 9-1, in IAC action Tuesday.
The Cardinals scored all the runs they would need in the bottom of the first inning, grabbing a 3-0 lead.
The Red Hawks got a run back in the third, but NV extended its lead to 5-1 in the fourth.
Newark Valley tacked on four insurance runs in the sixth.
The Cardinals racked up 11 hits with Laura Ludwig going 2-for-2 with a double, three runs and an RBI. Wandell went 2-for-2 also, and added a run and an RBI. Both players walked twice.
Kaitlyn Keith was 2-for-4 with two runs and an RBI; and Joslyn Wright was 2-for-4 with a run and RBI. Becca Thompson and Ruthanne Walburn contributed a hit and two RBI apiece; Abby Groover added a run and an RBI; Hattie Hines scored a run and Haven Aylesworth tacked on a hit.
Wandell scattered five hits and three walks and struck out six without yielding any earned runs.
NV (1-1) heads to Groton today.
