SECTION IV GIRLS LACROSSE: OWEGO COMPETITIVE, BUT FALLS SHORT AGAINST HORSEHEADS (2024-04-02)

TIOGA COUNTY — Owego’s Oriah Boland and Madison McEvoy accounted for four goals apiece, but their stellar efforts were overshadowed as Horseheads’ Lexi Lese scored six goals in the Blue Raiders’ 12-9 Section IV girls lacrosse victory Tuesday.
McEvoy posted a hat trick in the first quarter, finding the net at 7:04, 1:18 and with 16.7 seconds remaining to give the River Hawks a 3-2 edge.
Lese, who scored her team’s initial goal of the night, scored the Raiders’ next three, including a second-period hat trick. Her gals came at 11:23, 9:42 and 1:56.
Meanwhile, Boland put balls in the goal at 6:42 and 5:29, and McEvoy added another at 3:48 to make it 6-5 in the visitor’s favor at the half.
Lese tied the contest at 9:34 of the second half, then Horseheads surged ahead, 9-6, with scores at 5:24, 5:16 and 3:29.
The River Hawks picked up a goal by Amelia Sherman at 1:50.
Boland narrowed the gap to 9-8 at 7:17 of the final stanza, but the Raiders sealed the win with goals at 3:41, 2:43 and 1:53. Herceg tacked on her fourth tally with 1:29 to play.
In addition to scoring her 10th goal of the season, McEvoy also had eight ground balls, eight caused turnovers and won six draws.
Shannon Maslin made eight saves in goal.
Owego (1-2) hosts Maine-Endwell Thursday at 6:45 p.m.
