IAC BASEBALL: SVEC SEEKS CONTINUED IMPROVEMENT (2024-03-29)
Tioga County Sports Report
CANDOR / SPENCER — The Spencer-Van Etten /Candor baseball team found its way into the playoffs last season and is looking for a return in 2024.
“Last year we made sectionals for the first time in several seasons,” said coach Cliff Pierce.
The Eagles fell to Bainbridge-Guilford in the opening round, 3-1, a rough second inning being the key for the Bobcats.
SVEC posted a 7-10 record, winning four of its final five regular season games.
The Eagles bring back some key players to include Jacek Teribury (P/SS/3B), Levi Anderson (P/2B/OF), Owen Huizinga (P/C/OF) and Cameron Sinn (C/P/IF).
Newcomers whom Pierce is hoping can fill voids are Zach Lang, Deveon Aman, Logan Aman, Jason Jantz, Cyrus Torlyla, James Chrysler, Andrea LoPresti and Colton Churey.
SVEC did have a couple key graduation losses, however, in Cody Sayre playing at Tompkins Cortland Community College and Hunter Harmon who is at Mohawk Valley Community College.
Pierce is expecting “to improve on last year's performance” and “to make sectionals again.”
He won’t have to contend with Waverly, which accounted for three of the Eagles’ losses, but has since moved to the Southern Tier Athletic Conference.
SVEC opens the season Monday at Alderman Field in Van Etten at 4:30 p.m.
