SECTION IV GIRLS LACROSSE: OWEGO SURGES EARLY TO DOUBLE UP WHITNEY POINT (2023-03-28)

OWEGO — The Owego girls lacrosse team scored the first four goals of the evening and rolled to a 10-5 Section IV victory over defending Section IV champion Whitney Point Thursday.
It didn’t take long for the River Hawks to find their target as Madison McEvoy scored the first of her four goals just 27 seconds into the game.
Oriah Boland would increase the advantage to 3-0 with back-to-back scores at 7:44 and 4:33.
Lexi Herceg would notch her second hat trick of the season, starting it off with the first goal into the net at 10:38 of the second period.
The Golden Eagles’ Kylan Smith would end the shutout with a goal at 9:25, but Herceg would score again at 3:44 to make it 5-1.
Owego’s Amelia Sherman tallied the first goal of the second half at 11:07.
Laci Gates scored at 9:20 for the Point, then McEvoy followed with goals at 7:16 and 1:23 to register the hat trick.
She added a fourth goal at 6:36 of the final quarter and Herceg picked up her hat trick with 1:27 remaining to play.
Genevieve Huston tried to keep the Eagles in it with four fourth-period scores, those coming at the 9-minute mark, 3:26 and with 53.3 seconds left.
Sherman added an assist to the scoring while McEvoy contributed five draws, five caused turnovers and four ground balls. Alexis Nelson had four ground balls also, and Herceg and Ashleigh Steele added three apiece.
Owego (1-1) is off until April 9 when it hosts Seton Catholic (0-2) at 4:30 p.m.
