SECTION IV GIRLS LACROSSE: OWEGO HOPES TO COMPETE IN NEW DIVISION (2024-03-25)

Tioga County Sports Report
OWEGO — The Owego girls lacrosse team had an impressive campaign last spring — and is looking forward to remaining competitive as they move to a new division.

The River Hawks move to Section IV Division II this season to face the likes of Union-Endicott, Vestal, Maine-Endwell and Johnson City, and should prove to be a tough challenger, given the fact the team lost just two players.

Owego put together an impressive 12-3 record in Division III action last year before dropping a heartbreaker to defending champion Whitney Point in the Class D championship game.

The graduation losses will be big, however, as Autumn Hankey brought a strong offensive presence and Stella Doty was a stalwart defender.

Returning to the roster are veteran goalie Shannon Maslin and midfielder Madison McEvoy, who eclipsed 100 career goals late in the season, along with midfielder Alexis Nelson and defender Ashleigh Steele. Owego also brings back a handful of attackers in Oriah Boland, Lexi Herceg, Ella Hooker and Zoey Schneider.

Coach Ashlee Marsh said she is “looking forward to being competitive” in a new division.

Two of the River Hawks’ losses last season came against teams from larger classifications. They also avenged an early-season setback against Windsor.

Owego opens the season Tuesday evening at home against the Black Knights.
