HS GIRLS BASKETBALL: NEWARK VALLEY’S GARDNER, OWEGO’S McEVOY, DOANE EARN BCANY HONORS (2024-03-20)

TIOGA COUNTY — Newark Valley’s Cha Gardner, and Owego’s Madison McEvoy and Cassie Doane have received 2024 Basketball Coaches of New York Section IV all-star honors.

Gardner, a senior forward, and McEvoy, a junior guard, earned first-team honors. Doane, a senior forward/center, received an honorable mention.

McEvoy and Doane helped the River Hawks to a second-place finish in the Section IV Class A playoffs and a 12-10 record. Gardner led NV to a 21-2 mark and a runner-up showing in Class B.

McEvoy averaged 16.3 points (54 3-pointers), 3.5 assists, 3.5 steals (3.1 deflections PG), 2.5 rebounds and 0.5 blocks per game.

Her accolades include the Stars and Stripes Classic (selected by officials), Charlie Sibley Memorial all-tournament team, and More Than A Game Tournament MVP (STAC All-Conference and All-Division have not been announced yet).

Doane averaged a double-double with 10.9 points and 10.7 rebounds per game. She also averaged 2.0 steals, 1.5 assists and 0.9 blocks.

Division I-bound Gardner racked up a double-double for a second straight season with 506 points (22 points per game average) and 339 rebounds (14.7 average), setting the school scoring record in scoring and surpassing 1,000 boards. She also had 114 blocks (4.96), 96 assists (4.1) and 62 steals (2.7).

Gardner was the key behind NV's 21-2 record, 21-game win streak and repeats as the IAC South Large School and IAC Large School champions.

Also recognized from Tioga County was Waverly’s Ryleigh Judson as a second team pick.
