YOUTH WRESTLING: NEWARK VALLEY GRAPPLER TAKES 2ND, OWEGO COMPETITOR 5TH AT STATES (2024-03-14)

SYRACUSE — Newark Valley Wrestling Club’s Monica Phillips captured runner-up honors and Owego Youth Wrestling’s Cael Daly garnered a fifth-place spot at the 2024 New York Wrestling Association for Youth State Championships last weekend.

Phillips, competing in Girls Division 2, 53-55 pounds, went 2-1 in round robin action. She posted a 7-0 shutout and a 6-4 sudden victory decision, but suffered a close 2-0 loss.

Daly went 4-2 in Division 6, 74 pounds with one fall, an 8-2 victory and a pair of 4-0 decisions to his credit. His losses were by pin and a 3-2 heartbreaker.

Also competing for Owego were Joesph Monell (D7, 80), 3-2 with two first-period pins and a decision; Gavin Lovell (D8, 93), 1-2 with a decision; Nathan Freebern (D10, 138), 1-2 with a decision; Erik Monell (D8, 81); John Cornwell (D10, 131); and Trevor Monell (D10, 215).

NV’s James Phillips competed in D6, 78 pounds.

Tioga Tigers 3-Style had a pair of champions in Emalee Decker-Waters at G3, 109-113 and Kyah Nelson at G3, 159-164. Nelson pinned three opponents in a combined 94 seconds while Decker-Waters had two pins and a technical fall.

Carson Haskins (D5, 102) and Mya Brooks (G2, 58-59) contributed fourth-place showings for Tioga.
