NYS WRESTLING: NV’S CREELEY, CALLAHAN, OWEGO’S STRUBLE, SVEC’S JOHNSTON FACE GRUELING ROADS TO PODIUM (2024-02-19)

Tioga County Sports Report
ALBANY — Newark Valley’s Cadin Creeley and Titus Callahan, Owego’s Bobby Struble and Spencer-Van Etten/Candor’s John Johnston face grueling roads to the podium in their debuts at the 2024 NYSPHSAA Division II Wrestling Championships Friday and Saturday at MVP Arena here.

Johnston is the only member of the group seeded to get out of the first round at No. 10 and actually receives a bye at 170 pounds. The junior pits his 29-9 record against 7th-seeded Kayleb Martin (24-7) from Sackett's Harbor in Section III.

Creeley (35-7) is the 17th seed at 152 and meets Cazenovia’s Broden Enders (Section III), who comes in at 38-4. With a victory the sophomore would face defending state champion Caden Bellis (30-1) of Tioga in the second round.

Struble (26-6) is seeded 21st at 170 and tangles with the 12 seed, Jack Brown (37-6) from Beekmantown (Section VII). If he can pull out a win the junior would meet Gouverneur’s Drew Gates (Section X), seeded fifth with a 28-6 record.

Callahan, a sophomore who weighs in the low 160s, made the jump up to 190 and it has paid off. At 28-13 and seeded 22nd, he meets No. 11 Charlie Rossner from Canton (Section X), who is 22-5. A win would bring No. 6 seed Malachi Smith of Byron Bergen (Section V), who is 37-1.

With 10 Tioga grapplers and two more from Waverly heading to states, Tioga County will be well represented.

The Tigers’ Declan McKee (101), Caden Bellis (152) and Ousmane Duncanson (160) are seeded first; Logan Bellis (116) is a No. 2 seed; Jayden Duncanson (131), Gianni Silvestri (138) and Tyler Roe (145) are three seeds, Kadin Cole (108) is seeded fourth; Drew Macumber (160) is seeded fifth; and Deakon Bailey is seeded 12th.

The Wolverines’ Troy Beeman is the five seed at 285 and Matthias Welles is seeded ninth at 215.

Wrestling begins at 10 a.m. Friday and 9:30 a.m. Saturday with Friday’s opening ceremonies being held at 9:30 a.m. Doors open at 8:15 and 8:30 a.m., respectively.

MVP Arena will be cleared after the consolation rounds and will reopen at 5:15 p.m. Opening ceremonies for the finals begin at 5:50 p.m. with the championship round beginning at 6:05 p.m.
