IAC JV GIRLS BASKETBALL: MARATHON TOPS S-VE TO WIN SMALL SCHOOL CHAMPIONSHIP (2024-02-15)

SPENCER — Marathon gradually pulled away from Spencer-Van Etten for a 34-24 victory in the IAC JV Girls Small School championship game Wednesday night.
A pair of baskets by Elizabeth VanCise and a 3-pointer from Kennedy Eaton offset single buckets by the Panthers’ Lauren Gillette and Kaidince Root for a 7-4 Olympians lead in the first quarter.
Faith Baker and Alina Parker knocked down two buckets each, and Savanna Warfield tacked on three points as Marathon extended its advantage to 20-14 at the half.
Gillette scored three points, Kaylee Kastenhuber added a trey, and Madelyn Ellison and Root had two points each in the quarter.
The Olympians held S-VE to a pair of third-quarter free throws, stretching their lead to 28-16 heading into the final frame.
Baker led a balanced scoring attack with eight points as Marathon finished its season at 15-3.
Kastenhuber paced S-VE (8-5) with seven points, six rebounds, three steals and one assist; and Gillette added five points, five boards and a steal. Root contributed four points, three assists, two steals and one rebound; and Ellison tacked on four points and two steals.
Neveaha Soto had two points and three boards; Kendall Gentile added one points, four boards, four steals and an assist; Trinity Dashler pitched in with one point, three steals and a rebound; and Kelci Wright had one steal.
