IAC JV GIRLS BASKETBALL: WHITNEY POINT DOWNS NEWARK VALLEY FOR LARGE SCHOOL TITLE (2024-02-15) Tioga County Sports Report
NEWARK VALLEY — Whitney Point erupted for 31 points in the second and third quarters to win the IAC JV Girls Large School championship, 39-29, over Newark Valley Wednesday night.
The Cardinals got off to a 5-2 lead on a basket and 3-pointer by Bri Noble, but WP rallied to take a 6-5 edge into the second quarter.
Seven points from Hannah Somers, and four apiece by Kylan Smith and Eleanora Jordan pushed the Golden Eagles’ advantage to 21-12 at the break.
Malloy Chapman had a bucket and a trey for NV in the period.
Whitney Point got hot from long range in Q3 with Natalie St. John knocking down a trio of treys and Smith adding a fourth, and the Eagles’ 16-6 surge created a 37-18 cushion entering the final eight minutes of action.
Noble scored five points in the final frame, including her second trey of the evening. Gabrielle James added a three-ball also and Haven Aylesworth tacked on three points.
Smith and Somers scored 11 points each to lead the Eagles.
Noble tallied a game-high 13 markers, Chapman and James added five points apiece, Aylesworth had four and Leah Lansing tacked on two.
Whitney Point ended the season at 12-1 while NV finished 12-6.
