IAC JV BOYS BASKETBALL: MORAVIA ROLLS PAST CANDOR TO REPEAT AS CONFERENCE CHAMP (2024-02-13)

CANDOR — Four Moravia players scored in double figures to lead the Blue Devils to a 70-46 victory over Candor in the IAC JV boys basketball championship Tuesday evening.

Moravia was effective from the field and took advantage of Coyote turnovers to build an early lead which Candor could not overcome.

The Devils put together 5-0 and 9-0 runs to grab a 20-8 lead at the end of the first quarter. Six of their points came from Jairen Francis, who was dominant in the paint the majority of the game, Eli Landis added another five and Zach Szachta tacked on four more. Matt Smith and Teagan Kwiatkowski drained 3-pointers for the home team.

The Coyotes’ Kyle Jantz scored four points in the second quarter, and Nick Oakes and Mason Rose canned one trey each as Candor outscored Moravia, 13-12, to make it 37-21 at the half. The Devils received seven points from Landis, four from Noah Corbett and a three-ball by Carson Andrews.

Corbett and Dillon Palmer pumped out five points apiece, and Szachta added four as Moravia extended its advantage to 55-34 heading into the final stanza. Kwiatkowski had five points, including his second three of the contest, and Kyle Jantz knocked down a pair of baskets.

The Devils continued to spread the scoring in the fourth quarter with Francis tacking on five points. The Coyotes picked up four points from Charlie Hilbert and a trey by James Pritchard.

The teams combined to attempt 54 free throws, but neither was effective at the stripe. Moravia went 14-for-32 while Candor was just 8-for-17.

Moravia (19-1) was led by Landis with 16 points and Francis with 15. Corbett and Szachta contributed 11 markers each.

Candor (14-6) was paced by Kwiatkowski with 10, and Hilbert and Jantz with eight apiece. Smith chipped in with six, Rose recorded five, and Hunter Cody, Oakes and Pritchard added three apiece.
