IAC GIRLS BASKETBALL: NEWARK VALLEY ROLLS OVER T-BURG, 55-15 (2024-02-09)

Tioga County Sports Report
NEWARK VALLEY — Newark Valley gradually increased its advantage over Trumansburg Friday evening before erupting for 23 fourth-quarter points in a 55-15 IAC Large School victory.

The win gave the Cardinals a 14-0 record in conference action and 18-1 overall mark. They haven’t lost since the first game of the season.

Liv Short scored five points and Aubrey Kwiatkowski knocked down a 3-pointer as NV registered a 10-7 lead in the first quarter.

In the second period, Kam Short matched her sister’s five markers and Newark Valley took a 19-13 lead into halftime.

Cha Gardner, who had just four points in the first half, pumped out nine points in the third quarter, leading NV to a 32-23 lead.

She tacked on 13 more in the final stanza while Kam Short added four points and Adriana Rich canned a three-ball during a 23-4 run.

“Senior night is always tricky and I’m really glad we were able to put together a quality performance for Cha’s final regular season home game,” NV coach Greg Schweiger said. “It was an excellent defensive effort and execution by the whole team, and once our offense got clicking in the second half, we took command of the game.

“After a slow start, Cha turned in her usual stellar performance with nearly a triple-double. I like the fact that we are getting contributions from the rest of the team. Tonight the Short girls stepped up and provided us a boost.”

Gardner finished the contest with 26 points and 16 rebounds, as well as seven blocks, four steals and three assists.

Kam Short’s numbers included nine points, five boards and one steal, and Liv Short’s tallies featured seven points, five boards, four assists, one block and one steal.

Adrianna Finta added four points, five rebounds, two assists and a steal; Rich had three points, three assists, two steals and one board; and Kwiatkowski contributed three points, two assists, two rebounds and one steal.

Anaya Aylesworth had two points and one rebound; Becca Thompson tacked on a point, a steal and a rebound; and Kim Beebe grabbed two boards.

NV could face T-burg again for the IAC Large School title next week.
