HS BOYS BASKETBALL: CANDOR HOLDS OFF TOWANDA, 61-55 (2024-02-09)

TOWANDA — Candor withstood a star performance by Towanda’s Teagan Irish and a Knights comeback attempt to post a 61-55 victory in non-league boys’ basketball action Friday.

The Knights were down 11 points at the half, and got it to within one going into the final frame, but Candor was flawless from the free throw line down the stretch, going 13-for-13 to secure the win.

Bayley Poll added 11 points as Ben Shrawder scored eight for Towanda. Graham Welles, Kole Heyer and Markel Garner had three points each to round out the scorers.

Jadon Heidl led Candor with 19 points as Jakobe Foster scored 16. Candor jumped out to a 13-8 first quarter lead behind three 3-balls from Heidl, with Irish netting five for the Knights.

An 18-point second frame from Candor extended the Coyotes’ lead to 31-20 at the half as they went 6-for-8 from the free throw line.

Towanda flipped the script in the third, out scoring Candor 18-8 behind a combined 12 points from Shrawder and Irish, cutting it to 39-38.

Irish went off for 12 of his team’s 17 fourth-quarter points in the final frame but they couldn’t overcome Candor’s 22.

The Coyotes (17-2) face Moravia for the IAC Small School championship next Friday at 7:30 p.m. at TC3.
