STAC GIRLS BASKETBALL: SETON’S LATE SCORING BLITZ DROPS OWEGO (2024-02-08)

Tioga County Sports Report
BINGHAMTON — Seton Catholic pumped out 25 fourth-quarter points to rally past Owego, 53-51, in STAC Central division girls basketball action Thursday.

The Saints scored the go-ahead basket with 18 seconds left and Owego was looking for a foul call that never came with Cassie Doane controlling the ball in the paint when the game ended.

Seton scored almost half its points in the final eight minutes as Alexandra Back netted 10 of her game-high 21 points. Olympia Hopf and Lucy Atkins split another 10 points, and Atkins and Erin Derr tacked on 3-pointers.

The River Hawks’ defense held the Saints to single digits in the first two periods en route to a 27-14 lead.

Owego doubled up the home team, 12-6 in the first quarter, led by Madison McEvoy’s trey and field goal. She added another trey and basket in the second while Ava Brown put in six points.

McEvoy nailed her third trey of the night and added two more buckets in the third, and Doane added four points.

Meanwhile, Seton doubled its scoring output, and edged the River Hawks by point, to make it a 40-28 contest heading into the final stanza.

McEvoy hit four three-balls and finished with a team-high 20 points. Brown and Doane contributed a dozen points each, and Taylor Dalton and Lexi Herceg added four and three points, respectively.

Atkins joined Back in double digits with 14 points and Emerald Cole tacked on nine markers.

Owego (10-8) hosts Auburn in a non-conference game Monday at 6:45 p.m.
