SECTION IV WRESTLING: OWEGO’S STRUBLE DRAWS DIVISION II TOP SEED (2024-02-08)

Tioga County Sports Report
BINGHAMTON — Owego junior Bobby Struble has drawn the top seed at 170 pounds for the Section IV Division II Wrestling Championships being held at Visions Veterans Memorial Arena Saturday.

Struble, who won Qualifier A last Saturday, draws a first-round bye and will face Darren Rose of Oneonta or BGAH’s Devon Rowe in the quarterfinals.

If he reaches the championship final, Struble could face Spencer-Van Etten/Candor’s John Johnston, the No. 2 seed. The junior came from eight points down to win the Qualifier B title.

Johnston receives a first-round bye also, then meets the winner of Jaxson Backus from Walton/Delhi and Susquehanna Valley’s Kade Bailey in the quarters.

Potential semifinal opponents are the Maine-Endwell duo of Mark Winchell for Struble and Kazio Jellick for Johnston.

SVEC’s Shane Neal, and Newark Valley’s Cadin Creeley and Titus Callahan are seeded fourth at 145, 152 and 190, respectively.

Neal won an intense 4-3 battle with Oneonta’s Alan Little in the Qualifier B championship bout and the two will meet in the quarterfinals this week. The winner faces top-seeded Tyler Roe of Tioga in the semis.

Creeley, fourth in Qualifier A, is also seeded fourth overall and receives a bye in the opening round. He takes on Marathon’s Brittan Keller in the quarterfinals with a potential semifinal meeting with defending state champ Caden Bellis of Tioga.

Callahan bumped up from 170 to reach the 190-pound final last week. He was well ahead of Deposit/Hancock’s Cam Caskey before giving way to his bigger opponent. After a bye, Callahan will meet Marathon’s Dawsyn Cole in the quarterfinals Saturday with a potential date against Windsor standout Mason McCombs in the semis.

Owego’s Collin Monell comes in as the fifth seed at 138, jumping up from 131. Following a first-round bye, he meets Asaac Mead, who handed him his first loss of the season, in the quarterfinals. The winner gets Tioga’s Gianni Silvestri, a two-time state champ and 2023 state runner-up.

SVEC’s Caden Ruben (124) and Jak Smith (190) have drawn the No. 6 seeds. Ruben receives a bye, then wrestles Lansing’s Owen Clark in the quarterfinals. Smith gets a bye, then meets D/H’s Caskey in the quarters.

NV’s Trevor Middendorf and Logan Woodin are the seventh seeds at 116 and 145, respectively. Middendorf meets Tristan Farley from Susquehanna Valley in the preliminary round with the winner moving on to face Tioga’s Logan Bellis, a returning state runner-up. Woodin goes against Schuyler’s James Forker and, with a win, meets Tioga’s Deakon Bailey.

The Cardinals’ Seth Northrop comes in as the No. 8 seed at 215 and tangles with Nolan Boyles from Unatego/Unadilla Valley/Franklin in the opening round. The winner moves on to face top-seeded Dominick Weaver of Windsor.

Newark Valley’s Andrew Lelik (101) and Austin DeBolt (285), and Dylan Brace (124) are seeded ninth.

Lelik meets Camryn Rosenbarker of Chenango Valley to begin the tournament. The victor goes up against Tioga’s top-seeded Declan McKee in the quarters.

Brace takes on Ahmet Zaggout of U/UV/F in his opener with D/H’s No. 1 seed Landyn Shaffer awaiting the winner.

DeBolt goes up against D/H’s Ryan Stoss in the prelims and the winner moves on to meet Waverly’s Troy Beeman, the No. 1 seed.

The preliminaries begin at 8:30 a.m. and the finals start at 6 p.m.
