IAC GIRLS BASKETBALL: NO. 2 NEWARK VALLEY CONTINUES TO ROLL

WHITNEY POINT — Newark Valley received a dozen points or more from three different players to record a 50-24 victory over Whitney Point in IAC Large School girls basketball action Tuesday.
Cha Gardner and Adriana Finta put up 13 points apiece and Liv Short added a dozen markers as the cardinals improved to 13-0 in division play and 17-1 overall.
“Balanced scoring effort tonight and I’m pleased with our defensive showing.” said NV coach Greg Schweiger, whose team was bumped up to No. 2 in the Class B state rankings earlier in the day. The Cardinals trail only Hornell out of Section V.
Gardner, Finta and Adrianna Rich canned one 3-pointer each as the Cardinals eked out an 11-9 first-period lead.
Gardner added 10 more points, including another trey, in the second quarter as NV extended its advantage to 27-13.
Liv Short pumped out eight points to guide the scoring effort in the third quarter and Finta popped her second and third treys of the contest, pushing the Newark Valley lead to 43-21 heading into the final stanza.
Anika Smith had four points down the stretch.
Gardner also grabbed 13 rebounds to give herself another double-double, and also had four assists, three blocks and one steal. Finta chipped in with four steals, two assists and two boards; and Liv Short tacked on six boards, three steals and an assist.
Smith scored six points and had six thefts; Rich contributed three points, three rebounds, two assists and two steals; Aubrey Kwiatkowski had two points, three assists, two blocks and two steals; Kam Short recorded four renounds, two assists and one steal; Kim Beebe had one point; and Becca Thompson added one steal.
NV closes out the regular season at home Friday against North Large leader Trumansburg.
