SECTION IV WRESTLING: CALLAHAN LEADS NEWARK VALLEY EFFORT AT QUALIFIER (2024-02-04)

Tioga County Sports Report
TIOGA CENTER — Titus Callahan jumped up in weight class and captured runner-up honors to lead a group of seven Newark Valley wrestlers at the Section IV Division II Qualifier A wrestling tournament Saturday who will compete at least one more week.

Callahan, who came in with 25 wins, moved from 170 to 190, where there was just one competitor with at least 20 victories.

He decisioned Caleb Wildenstein of Unatego/Unadilla Valley/Franklin, 7-4, then pinned Dawsyn Cole of Marathon in 3:06. That put him in the championship bout against Cam Caskey from Deposit/Hancock and was dominating the match until the much bigger Cskey caught him in a cradle for a fall with 48 seconds left.

The Cardinals struggled in placement matches as Seth Northrup was the only winner. He decked Nolan Boyles from Unatego/Unadilla Valley/Franklin in 4:01 to pick up the bronze. Northrop dropped a 6-4 decision to Braden Reid Norwich in the semifinals.

NV had five more sectional qualifiers who placed fourth.

Andrew Lelik (101) fell to Brogan LeFever of Unatego/Unadilla Valley/Franklin by pin in one minute, then dropped a 4-3 heartbreaker to Camryn Rosenbarker of Chenango Valley.

Trevor Middendorf (116) dispatched Tristan Farley of Susquehanna Valley in 2:59, but lost to defending state champ Darren Florance from BGAH, 6-0, in the semis and lost to Jason Canedo of Deposit/Hancock, 3-0.

Logan Woodin (145) edged teammate Logan Rhodes, 4-3, in his first match of the day, then lost by pin to Tioga’s Deakon Bailey in 1:20 in the semis, and lost to Abdeen Zaggout from Unatego/Unadilla Valley/Franklin, 8-1.

Cadin Creeley (152) took care of Jackson Velez from Deposit/Hancock in 5:27, but gave up an 11-3 major decision to Wyatt Meade of Unatego/Unadilla Valley/Franklin in the semis before decking BGAH’s Ryan Blackman in 38 seconds.

Austin Debolt (285) opened with an 11-2 major decision over Ryan Stoss from Deposit/Hancock, but suffered a pin in 5:10 against Elliott Briggs of BGAH. In the placement bout, he dropped a 1-0 squeaker to Tioga’s Tate MaCauley.

Newark Valley had two other placewinners who fell just shy of sectionals.

Logan Rhodes (145) took sixth. After losing to Woodin, he decked Dominick Homer of Marathon in 2:20, and suffered a disqualification against Blake Prisco from BGAH.

Gabe Merrill (160) was also sixth. He lost by fall to Lucas Barnes from Deposit/Hancock in 5:03, then pinned Owego’s Vinny Mauriello in 24 seconds. He gave up a fall to Zachary LaMantia from Susquehanna Valley in 1:57 in his final match.

Also competing for NV were Dustin Card (131), who went 1-2 with a 25-second pin; and Leland Houston (108), Michael Wandell (124) and Marcos Escalante (138) all going 0-2.
