STAC BOYS BASKETBALL: OWEGO HOLDS OFF SUS VALLEY (2024-01-19)

Tioga County Sports Report
OWEGO — Susquehanna Valley took advantage of an Owego scoring lull in the third quarter to test the River Hawks Friday night.

Owego survived the upset bid, scoring 20 points in the final stanza to pull out a 64-58 STAC boys basketball victory

“It certainly wasn’t pretty, but all credit to SV and their coaching staff,” Owego coach Chris Evans said. “They had an excellent game plan and they out rebounded us.”

“Ben Rollison went 6-for-6 from the line in the fourth quarter — and we needed every one of them. (Kam) Wicklund and (Matt) Higgins gave us great minutes off the bench!”

In addition to Rollison’s effort, Riley Loomis scored seven of his team-high 18 points in the game’s final eight minutes.

Wicklund (with two) and Higgins accounted for three of the River Hawks six 3-pointers. Loomis, Talan Schumacher and Joseph Palladino had the team’s other treys.

Owego scored 18 points in each of the first two periods to grab a 36-27 halftime advantage. Higgins, Pallaadino and Wicklund hit for one three apiece in the opening stanza while Rollison had five points.

Loomis and Palladino scored seven and six points, respectively, in the second quarter while Wicklund knocked down his second trey.

Zack Bensley had a pair of buckets in the third while the Sabers’ Luke Koriam pumped out nine of his game-high 21 points to create a 44-44 deadlock after three periods.

Joining Loomis in double figures were Palladino and Rollison with 11 points apiece. Bensley scored eight, Schumacher had seven, Wicklund contributed six and Higgins tacked on three.

It was the 10th win of the season for Owego, which is now 10-3 overall.
