Tioga County Sports Report
TIOGA CENTER — Once again, Tioga, now 6-0, showed why it’s won 37 matches in a row, and the last two New York State, Division 2 duals titles in handing previously-unbeaten Newark Valley a 61-3 setback here Wednesday night in IAC wrestling action.

Newark Valley coach Eric D’Arcy has been around a long time, and he knew the Cardinals faced tall odds entering the Tioga gym on Senior Night against a group of Tiger seniors who have combined to win five individual state titles, and 11 state medals.

“Of course, we knew what we were walking into tonight,” he said. “I told my kids to work hard, brawl a little bit, and stay in the matches.

“We were coming in here a little disadvantaged, but you have to show up, and you have to compete.

“I’ve seen (Tioga) mow down everyone this year, and they’re going to keep doing it,” added D’Arcy. “They are the probably the best high school team I’ve seen in my career, in terms of top to bottom quality kids.”

Cardinal senior Seth Northrop provided the team’s only points with a 3-1 decision over Austin Babcock at 215 pounds.

“Seth Northrop did a nice job,” said D’Arcy. “He wrestled a smart match.”

Newark Valley also dropped a couple hard-fought decisions.

Junior Titus Callahan dropped a 3-0 decision to Drew Macumber at 170 pounds, and Tioga heavyweight Tate McCauley scored a takedown late in the third period for a 5-3 win over junior Austin DeBolt.

“Titus (Callahan) wrestled tough,” said D’Arcy. “He’s come a long way, he was a JV kid last year … he wrestled a kid (Drew Macumber) who was sixth in the State last year, and lost 3-0. He’s coming.”

At 108 pounds, Tioga’s Kadin Cole avenged a pair of losses to junior Trevor Middendorf last year with an 11-3 major decision.

“There were a couple of matches where a few little things didn’t go our way,” said D’Arcy. “A couple things at 285 go a different way, and that’s a different match.”

“Even at 108, there were a couple scrambles where we didn’t get the points — not sure why, but we didn’t get the points,” he added. “If we do, it could be different.”

In the only other matches to go six minutes, Tioga’s two-time state champ Gianni Silvestri scored a technical fall at the final buzzer, topping sophomore Logan Rhodes, 19-3, and Tioga senior Tyler Roe forged an 12-1 major decision over sophomore Caden Creeley.

Newark Valley, now 7-1, returns to action Thursday night at Deposit-Hancock.
