IAC BOYS BASKETBALL: MORAVIA TOPS CANDOR IN SHOWDOWN OF STATE-RANKED TEAMS (2024-01-05)
Tioga County Sports Report
CANDOR — Two of the hottest teams in Section IV clashed Friday evening in an IAC Small School boys basketball showdown. Both Candor and Moravia had won six consecutive games so something had to give. Unfortunately for Coyote fans, it was the Blue Devils walking away with a 61-54 victory.
The Moravia streak consisted of double-digit wins with five of them coming by 25 points or more while Candor’s run included some exciting holiday triumphs.
The Coyotes would grab a 17-15 edge in the first quarter of this battle, primed by Carson Heidl’s six points and another five by Jacek Teribury, offsetting six markers from Abram Wasileski, and one 3-pointer each by Riley Jones and Aiden Kelly.
Kelly would knock down another three-ball in the second quarter and score nine points to help the Devils forge a 34-28 lead at halftime. Wasileski and Drew Nye added six and four points, respectively.
Jadon Heidl hit a trey and had five points for Candor.
Moravia edged the Coyotes, 16-15, in the third quarter as Jones canned his second three-ball of the evening and Nye hit for six points.
Likewise, Teribury made his second three of the contest while Jakobe Foster added a three and four free throws.
Teribury contributed two more baskets in the final frame, but Candor was unable to make up any ground on the visitors.
Wasileski led all scorers with 16 points, Kelly added 15 and Nye had 12 for Moravia (8-3), which came in ranked 20th among the state’s Class C teams.
Candor (8-2), which is ranked seventh in Class C, was paced by Teribury’s 14-point effort. Foster chipped in with 13, Carson Heidl had 11 and Jadon Heidl tacked on 10. Donald Makie and Jason Jantz added four and two points respectively.
The Coyotes host Union Springs, a Class C honorable mention, Tuesday.
