HS WRESTLING: OWEGO’S CRAFT TAKES SECOND AT KNUUTILA TOURNAMENT (2023-12-17)

SANBORN, N.Y. — Owego’s RaeAnn Craft won four out of five bouts to grab second place honors in the girls competition at the 2023 Linda C. Knuutila Memorial Wrestling Tournament at Niagara County Community College Saturday.

Seeded third at 126 pounds, she lost to top-seeded Noli Paddock of Chautauqua Lake by fall in 1:43 in the championship match.

Craft pinned her first four opponents to reach the finals. She dispatched Marissa Taraof Orchard Park in 2:32 then decked Izabella Hurlburt of Chautauqua Lake in 56 seconds. She followed that up with a pin of Jayden Crouse from Sweet Home in 3:39 then added another quick pin, just 47 seconds against Emma Ponzi of Niagara Wheatfield in the semifinals.

In Day 2 of the boys tournament, the River Hawks’ Collin Monell (131) and Bobby Struble (170) both went 1-1.

Monell was involved in a pair of 1-point decisions as he defeated Moshin Ali of Amherst, 8-7, before falling to Ryder Reichert from Alexander, 2-1. Struble won his first match by fall, dispatching Amherst’s Abbas Al-Mutiary in 1:55, then dropped a 6-4 verdict to Evan Braunscheidel from Hamburg.

Both River Hawk wrestlers made it to the top 12 before bowing out. Struble’s bracket had 40 competitors and Monell’s had 34

Owego’s Dylan Brace (131) also competed on Day 2, suffering a 12-3 major decision setback against Ricky Andres of Lancaster. Brace reached the final 16.

Next up for Owego is a home triangular Tuesday against Chenango Valley and Johnson City.
