ALL-TIOGA COUNTY VOLLEYBALL: CANDOR’S SWARTZ, OWEGO’S HAMED SHARE TOP ACCOLADE (2023-12-09)

TIOGA COUNTY — The local volleyball courts were loaded with talent this season with Candor and Owego winning two of the six Section IV championships, Tioga finishing as the runner-up to a state semifinalist, and Spencer-Van Etten having one of its most successful seasons ever.

The Coyotes’ Phoebe Swartz and the River Hawks’ Maggie Hamed dominated their respective positions and share the “Player of the Year” honor.

Swartz, a junior setter, was named to the Class D all-state first team, was selected for the all-tournament team at the state playoffs and was also the co-MVP of the IAC Small School division.

She handed out 510 assists this season and was also a strong server, scoring 242 points, 94 of which were aces.

Hamed, a sophomore outside hitter, was named to the Class A all-state fourth team and was a Central/East all-conference pick for the STAC champions.

She connected for 169 kills, giving her 514 in her 3-year career. Hamed tallied a season-high 21 in the sectional championship match. She also served up 33 aces and had 120 digs.

Tioga’s RaeAnne Feeko is the “Newcomer of the Year.” Also selected the Valley Sports Report newcomer, the sophomore setter dished out 212 assists, served 148 points, and had 163 digs, 29 kills and eight blocks.

Candor’s Pam Quinlan is the “Coach of the Year,” taking the Coyotes to their third appearance in the past four state tournaments and they took eventual champion Chautauqua Lake to five sets in the semifinals. Candor went 16-3 overall and was undefeated during the IAC Small School regular season.
