ONEONTA — Vestal made the necessary adjustments after falling behind early and rallied to defeat Newark Valley, 43-35, in the first round of the Anthony Drago Tip-off Tournament Friday evening.
The Cardinals jumped out to a 13-9 first quarter lead behind eight points from Cha Gardner and led 17-12 at the half.
The Golden Bears regrouped at the break to take a 28-25 advantage into the final period.
“They were big and physical,” said NV coach Greg Schweiger.
Gardner would finish the game with a double-double, scoring 10 points and pulling down 19 rebounds. She also recorded five blocks, four steals and two assists.
Adriana Rich nailed a trio of 3-pointers to end up with nine points and added eight boards. Kamryn Short contributed eight points, four boards and two assists; Aubrey Kwiatkowski added six points; and Annika Smith tacked on two points, four steals and a block.
Vestal was led by Haley Carey and Tedessa DiRenzo, who scored 12 and 11 points, respectively. Carey went 5-for-6 at the free throw line while DiRenzo canned three threes.
