ALL-TIOGA COUNTY GIRLS SOCCER: OWEGO’S McDONALD LEADS EXCITING GROUP (2023-11-30)

Tioga County Sports Report
TIOGA COUNTY — Local girls soccer players were as exciting to follow this fall as any sport in the area. Leading the way was Owego’s high-scoring Erin McDonald, the 2023 All-Tioga County Girls Soccer “Player of the Year.”

The senior, selected the county’s top player for a third consecutive year, scored a program record 34 goals this season. She also finished her high school career with a program record 93 goals despite missing several games in 2022 due to injury. McDonald, a team captain, recorded hat tricks in seven games.

The “Newcomer of the Year” is being shared by Spencer-Van Etten/Candor forward Allie Lyon and Owego forward Ashlyn Dalton is this year’s “Newcomer of the Year.”

Lyon, an 8th-grader, scored 16 goals and dished out five assists as the Eagles overcame an 0-6 start to win four of their final nine games. She was named an IAC South Small School first-team all-star.

Dalton, a freshman scored 21 goals and doled out 11 assists. She was selected for to the STAC Central/East All-Conference all-star team.

Owego’s Laurel Neira is the “Coach of the Year.” She guided the River Hawks to a 15-2 overall record with eight shutouts to their credit. They won the Section IV Class A and STAC Central championships, going unbeaten in division play. Owego’s losses came against Class AA Horseheads and Class A state champion Rye in the state playoffs..
